Implants

Q. How do they work?

Implants can be used to support single crowns, bridges, and dentures. So, whether you are missing one tooth, several teeth or all of your teeth, dental implants may be an option for you.

Q. What is the procedure?

Dental implants typically are done in two stages. In the first stage, the site is precisely prepared and the implant placed in the jawbone. Usually the implant is covered by the gums.

After approximately 3-6 months of healing to allow bone to grow onto the surface of the implant, the top of the implant is uncovered.

The second stage is when your new teeth are custom made. This involves making impressions of your teeth and implant, then placement of your new teeth.

Implants can also be used to retain dentures.

Q. Are there any special requirements for taking care of dental implants?

Taking care of implants is as simple as taking care of your own teeth including brushing, flossing and regular dental check-ups. Your dentist or hygienist can show you how to keep your new teeth clean.

Q. How do I know if I am a candidate for dental implants?

Ask your dentist. After a thorough exam with appropriate x-rays, your dentist will explain if implants are right for you.
